New URI and NOAA partnership will explore the interactions between offshore wind development and marine ecosystems
Through a new 5-year formal partnership agreement, NOAA’s Northeast Fisheries Science Center and the University of Rhode Island will work together to research how offshore wind energy development will affect marine ecosystems.
Offshore wind energy development is a national priority. The United States has set a national target of 30 GW of installed offshore wind capacity by 2030 with the goal of increasing the amount of offshore wind energy available to us and decreasing our dependence on fossil fuels that are harmful to the environment. The URI and NOAA collaboration will provide offshore wind operations access to the data they need to conduct their work in a manner that minimizes harm to marine life, ocean livelihoods and coastal communities.
