RI Ocean Tech Hub forms, holds focus groups to gain intel from community.

Through a new Tech Hubs program, the US Department of Commerce will be investing $10 billion over five years to strengthen a region’s capacity to manufacture, commercialize, and deploy critical technologies to ensure that the industries of the future start, thrive and remain in the US. The good jobs at all skill levels related to these technologies will would also grow equitably and inclusively.

Rhode Island’s Blue Economy is a great candidate for this program. In response, the Rhode Island Commerce Corporation, Grow Blue and other blue economy partners have formed The RI Ocean Tech Hub.

The RI Ocean Tech Hub is a growing consortium of public, private, and academic partners in and around RI that are activating the ocean technology ecosystem. This consortium aims to develop and deploy a technology-based, globally competitive Hub that addresses economic and national security needs for the United States.

The first step is to scope out an application for funding through the EDA’s Tech Hubs program!

To prepare our application, RI Ocean Tech Hub will hold working sessions over the next month to gather information from community members.  We want to hear from YOU.

During these sessions, participants will:

  • Work to define RI's Ocean Tech Hub in business terms and market size/potential

  • Use the key technology focus areas: Robotics, Automation, Advanced Material Sciences and Climate Mitigation as our framework

  • Leverage a set of use cases as a starting point to specify the role of the private sector in the initiative

  • Identify companies that are needed to bring technology, capital, supply chain and workforce resources

  • Build on Rhode Island’s research and burgeoning ecosystem in this area

The first of these sessions are scheduled for next week at the Community College of Rhode Island’s Knight campus.  To participate in the session, register at  RI Ocean Tech Hub - Technology+ Working Session Tickets, Multiple Dates | Eventbrite.
