URI Researchers Reveal Seafloor Devastation
Following the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano eruption in January 2022, URI's oceanographer Roxanne Beinart led a team to investigate its underwater aftermath. Their research, published in Nature Communications Earth and Environment, showcased the extensive devastation caused by volcanic ash on marine life, particularly around hydrothermal vent fields. Utilizing remotely operated vehicles, the team captured video footage revealing the stark reality of the desolate seabed, smothered by ash deposits up to five feet deep. Despite COVID-19 delays and technical complexities, URI's researchers demonstrated remarkable adaptability and collaboration, employing cutting-edge technology to shed light on the resilience and recovery mechanisms of these fragile ecosystems. Through their pioneering work, URI continues to spearhead exploration efforts, unraveling the mysteries of our oceans and advocating for their protection.
